[/i]The report was produced for the LondonDevelopment Agency (LDA) by [b]BOP Consulting[/b], in association with GLAEconomics, London School of Economics and Experian. [/size]
[size=11pt] The report alsoreveals that London has more UNESCO world heritage sites (4), parks and greenspaces than its rivals, and stages more festivals (200) each year, manycelebrating the city’s diverse communities. London also has more than fivetimes the number of students at specialist art schools (50,000) than itsnearest rival (Shanghai, 10,000), and by far the highest number of overseasuniversity students (85,700). All of these factors help to make the city apopular visitor destination – London attracts by far the most internationaltourists each year (15.6 million). [/size]

[size=11pt] Londoners are alsoenthusiastic consumers of culture. 42% of Londoners have visited a museum orgallery in the past year (equal to New Yorkers, and a higher proportion thanParisians or Tokyo residents). They buy more theatre tickets than people inother cities, and spend more time reading each day than their counterparts inNew York and Paris. They also spend more time listening to music and radio orwatching TV, and more time online. [/size]

[size=11pt] But London does notlead the field in all areas. New York has more major concert halls, filmfestivals and films released at the cinema, for example. Paris has morebookshops. Tokyo has more bars and film releases. People in Shanghai and Tokyospend more time reading. [/size]
[size=11pt] Paul Owens, Directorof BOP Consulting, says: “Our research clearly demonstrates the importance ofthe cultural and creative economy to London’s position as one of the world’stop cities. We have long suspected that London is one of the most culturallyvibrant cities in the world, and now we have the proof. History tells us thatcities are remembered for their artistic and cultural achievements.” [/size]

[size=11pt] The study is an‘audit’ of those elements of culture that can be quantitatively measured usingsecondary data. It focuses on how culture is experienced, by examining thecultural infrastructure of cities, the cultural activities that take place, andthe size of the audiences that take part. It also looks at the culturaldiversity of each city, and the informal cultural activities that contribute tothe ‘buzz’ of the city streets. For the purposes of the report, ‘culture’ isdefined according to guidelines published by UNESCO, the EU and the UKDepartment for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS). It measures cultural activity inits many forms, from high art to popular culture. [/size]
